Cincinnati Walk for Children

Picture
This year my ISP involved volunteering at the Cincinnati Children’s Walk for Kids. The Walk for Kids is the one event that brings all the kids from the hospital together each year, and we were lucky enough to be apart of it. We were stationed at the finish line and our task was to cheer everyone on as they crossed. This turned out to be the most rewarding experience because we were able to witness success in its purest form.  Each kid may have had a different illness, but their beautiful, pride filled smiles were all the same as they finished the race. These smiles could only come from dedication, determination, and sometimes tears but in the end, I learned that it will all be worth it. I was one of over 5,000 people of different race, gender, and physical ability to come together and form a strong support team for these kids. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is a non-profit hospital and research facility so the money raised from the race directly benefits the families of the hospital and can help cure many various diseases. Every dollar raised helps save children’s lives.    -Gabby Ogle

Snack Time at Ronald McDonald

Picture
For our ISP, we took several students down to the Ronald Mcdonald House of Cincinnati. While we were there, we would make different snacks for the families staying there while their kids were undergoing treatment in the hospital next door. RMH was established to ease the financial burden for families and gives them a safe, warm place to come to at the end of the day. Our goal when we come make snacks for the families is to provide easy on-the-go snacks for families who spent all of their time shuttling back and forth from the hospital. We made anything from sugary chex mix to some savory pizza bites. Through our time at the house, we were able to meet with parents, siblings, and even cancer patients while we were creating our snacks. It was truly amazing to see the residents of the house smile when we put our snacks out on the counter and rang the bell when the snacks were ready to be served.   -Sydney Shepherd & Tanvi Brar

Matthew 25 Ministries

Picture
A group of us went to Matthew 25 Ministries in Blue Ash, Ohio to sort through various clothes and paints that were donated. M25M is an international humanitarian and disaster relief organization. Their goal is to provide food, water, clothing, affordable shelter, medical care, and humanitarian supplies to those in need-especially after the large number of natural disasters that has struck such as wildfires and multiple hurricanes. Although they do have full-time staff, they rely heavily on volunteers. Registering a few weeks in advance is required to volunteer.

On our first trip, we sorted through boxes of donations ranging from clothes to a variety of household items like towels and bowls. On our second trip, we sorted through buckets of paint that that were dumped into large drums and used for their Rainbow Paint program which gives re-blended latex paint for maintenance, rehab, and upgrade and improvement projects in areas in need. I loved working with this organization because were easy to communicate with about how I could gather a group of volunteers to help them out. We even got to jam to some music while we worked!    -Lian Haney
